Every Child Can Read, Inc.
Every Child Can Read serves children in Wayne County through the K-ready and Third Grade Academy programs. We believe every child deserves to enter school prepared to learn and to read at grade level by the third grade.
Special Events Volunteer

ECCR is the Wayne County affiliate for Little Free Library, which places books throughout the community for residents to borrow or take. Volunteers or civic groups needed to check on the Library "boxes" and replenish books as needed. Volunteers are not responsible for purchasing the books.

Cope Environmental Center
Cope Environmental Center's mission is to promote the sustainable use of the earth's resources through education, demonstration and research.
Receptionist
Greet visitors in person and over the phone, answering their questions and fielding phone calls for staff.
Gardner
Help with weeding of landscape as well as fall cleanup. Planting, weeding and harvesting of farmstead vegetable gardens.
Invasive Species Removal Team
Year-round work removing invasive species on 130 acres. Primary species are honeysuckle, privet rose, and autumn olive.
Educator
Lead small groups of students on school field trips, assist with on-site programs, teach or assist with outreach programs and represent CEC at fairs and festivals with informational and educational table.

The mission of the Wayne-Union County CASA Program is to provide specially selected trained community volunteers. To advocate for abused and neglected children to help ensure their right to live in safe and permanent homes.
Child Advocacy (Volunteer)
You do not have to be a lawyer or social worker to be a volunteer. We welcome people from all walks of life. We are simply looking for people who care about children and have common sense. If you want to help and want to see a child be given a chance to be happy, healthy and strive to help them get to a safe environment. Then we need you to help us.

Levi & Catharine Coffin State Historic Site
To interpret the history of Levi and Catharine Coffin and their involvement with the Underground Railroad.
Docent
Giving tours of the Levi Coffin House. The tour includes the eight rooms of the house and the barn. The interpretation covers the Coffin's involvement in the Underground Railroad, their Quaker beliefs and the house which has been restored to the time period.
Skills Needed: A willingness to learn the history of the site; a friendly manner; ability to relate to people of all ages as well as the ability to be on feet and climb stairs is required.
Time Requested: The Levi & Catharine Coffin State Historic site is open to the public Wednesday through Sundays, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and open some holidays. Volunteers have the option of doing a four hour shift to assist with walk-in tours, which take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Shifts can be morning or afternoon. Volunteers also have the option to assist with specially booked groups, like student groups. Expect to be at the site for a minimum of two hours for group tours.

HELP The Animals, Inc.
HELP the Animals is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter dedicated to providing a safe haven for homeless animals until they can be placed in responsible, loving homes. We are committed to reducing pet overpopulation through a 100% spay/neuter program for HELP shelter animals, as well as an aggressive spay/neuter and humane treatment education programs for the community.
Animal Shelter Volunteer
Walking dogs, socializing cats and dogs. Fundraising, grant writing, working with students who make many trips to our shelter, shelter maintenance, laundry, cleaning and other duties as determined by the volunteer coordinator. Good loving inside foster homes always needed for both cats and dogs.

AseraCare Hospice
AseraCare, an Amedisys company, provides hospice care to patients and families which optimizes comfort and dignity and is consistent with the patient and family needs and goals. The hospice volunteer program provides direct care to patient and their loved ones, indirect care activities and education in the community and nursing facilities, bereavement support activities and administrative patient-related duties.
Direct Care Volunteer
Direct Care Volunteers provide non-medical support services to the hospice patient and/or family. These might include companionship, helping a patient document stories from their life, veteran to veteran visits, pet therapy, music, playing games, or sitting with patient while their caregiver is away at appointments or errands.
Skills Needed: We are looking for individuals with a passion for caring for others. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and undergo a background check, interview and complete orientation and training.
Time Requested: There is no required number of volunteer hours. However, volunteers could expect 1-2 hours per week depending on their availability.
Indirect Care Volunteer
Indirect Care Volunteers provide enrichment and comfort items for our patients and families, as well as education in the community, without having direct contact. Some example of indirect care are: making blankets, dignity scarves, sending cards, making a requested birthday cake or meal, or presenting at health fairs or other events.
Skills Needed: We are looking for individuals with a passion for caring for others. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and undergo a background check, interview and complete orientation and training.
Time Requested: Volunteer hours are according to volunteer availability. In this role, there will be extra need around holidays.
Professional Volunteer
Professional Volunteers volunteer their services to help out with the special needs of our patients to make them more comfortable and enhance their quality of life. These professions might include: massage therapists, hairdressers, pet therapists, musicians, and art therapists.
Skills Needed: These volunteers use their professional skills and experience to care for patients and their families. Volunteers must be licensed and/or certified in their discipline and complete the volunteer training.
Time Requested: Volunteer hours are according to their availability.

Morrisson-Reeves Library

Morrisson-Reeves Library is a public library that serves as a significant resource to the community, providing equal access to information through dynamic services, relevant programs and materials, and up-to-date technology. Special emphasis is placed upon early literacy, online access, popular materials and lifelong learning.
Adopt-a-Shelf Volunteer
The Library can best serve patrons when every item in the collection is in its proper space. In order to keep shelves of materials in order, volunteers are needed to "adopt" a selected or assigned section of shelving and maintain correct placement of materials. You will learn the unique requirements of shelving for the section. Family volunteering? You bet! Adopt-a-Shelf (or a special area) is a great way for parents to teach their children civic responsibility and have fun doing it.
Homework Help Volunteer
Would you like to be a crucial part of MRL's drop-in Homework Help that is provided to 3rd-5th grade students? Volunteers are needed to provide homework help every Friday from 3:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m. This position requires at least one semester commitment.
Materials Care Volunteer - Audio-Visual Services
Volunteers are needed to provide care for our materials in our Audio-Visual Services department including providing general cleaning of audio-visual materials, checking materials for damage, shelving materials, straightening shelves, and various other tasks that provide care for A-V materials.

Volunteers are needed to provide care for our materials in our Adult Services department including providing general cleaning of books, checking books for damage, shelving materials, straightening shelves, clearing the book drop, and various other tasks that provide care for Adult Services materials.
Administrative - Clerical and Special Projects Support
Are you interested in a behind the scenes volunteer opportunity? Our Administrative Department comprised of the Library Director, Business Manager, Marketing and Public Relations Coordinator, and Human Resources Manager has a need for volunteers to assist with making copies, filing, research, scanning documents, and other related tasks including special projects.
Children's Services Program Volunteer
Assist and support the Children's Services staff with various tasks in the delivery of quality service to patrons. Assist with children's program set-up, crowd control, attendance count, and serving items during programs. Straighten chairs, pick up materials, and assist with after program clean-up.
Materials Care Volunteer - Children's Services
Volunteers are needed to provide care for our materials in our Children's Services department including providing general cleaning of books and toys, checking books and toys for damage, cleaning computer screens and keyboards, shelving materials, straightening shelves, and various other tasks that provide care for Children's Services materials.
Children's Craft Volunteer
Assist and support the Children's Services staff with various tasks in preparing for story time and craft materials. Assist in preparing story time and craft materials and pull materials for story time events. This is a great position for someone who loves crafts.
Children's Book Prep Volunteer
Assist and support the Children's Services staff with tasks in preparing books for special collections. Assist in pulling books for collections, enter appropriate grade level in books, enter accelerated reader information in books, and other related tasks.
Summer Reading Volunteer
Stay busy in the summer and volunteer to help with our busy Summer Reading Program—register kids for the program, distribute prizes, assist with programs, help create craft projects, assist with book displays and more! This position fills up quickly so interested individuals should submit a volunteer application in early spring.
Shelving Assistant
If you've ever looked for a book that is supposed to be on the shelf and you can't find it, then you know how important correctly shelved materials are to the user-friendly library. This is a great position for discovering all the wonderful materials the library has to offer. You will learn the correct placement of library materials and requirements for shelving.
MRL Greeter & Tour Guide
This is the first stop for visitors to discover Morrisson-Reeves Library – volunteers will provide information on location of library services, scheduled events, and library tours. MRL Greeter duties include greeting and providing directional information to library patrons and the general public as they enter the Library for special programs such as, but not limited to, FMRL Book Sales, Talk to A Lawyer, Free Tax Service, etc. Tour guide duties include meeting pre scheduled community and school groups and showing them around the library; reading a story or two, providing age-appropriate or requested information to them; and giving out handouts as requested.
Landscape Care Volunteer
Do you have a green thumb? Would you like to put your love of gardening and landscape care to great use at the Library. Be a part of the beautification team that assists with landscape care including weeding, trimming, raking, mulching, etc.
"Create your Own" Volunteer Assignment
Do you have unique skills, talents, and/or a creative side that you can offer in a volunteer position at Morrisson-Reeves Library? Some possible skills that could be utilized are creative writing, arts and crafts, reading to children, technology, visual arts, literary arts, performing arts – music, theatre, dance, film, special event planning, etc. We would love to hear your ideas!

Wayne County Cardinal Greenway
The Cardinal Greenway is the longest trail in the state of Indiana at 62 miles and we have 22.5 miles here in Wayne County. The Greenway offers a free health and wellness resource for our community to walk, run, bicycle and spend time outside.
Maintenance Volunteer
Maintenance volunteers will help keep the Greenway clean, clear and safe for our users. This could involve tasks such as picking up trash and debris, clearing trees and brush and assisting our maintenance staff.
Skills Needed: Minimal skills are required for most work but could include light trimming of trees/brush, weed eating or trash pickup. Equipment such as blowers, weed eaters or trimmers can be volunteers personal or can be provided by the Greenway. Work can be done by volunteer alone or assisting Greenway staff and/or other volunteers.
Time Requested: Time requirement is flexible and work can be performed at the convenience and availability of volunteers. The Greenway is open and available for use from dawn to dusk every day of the year so work can be done anytime during these time periods. Minimal training is needed and work can be done with no supervision.
Trail Ranger
Patrol the trails at a pace suitable to their own schedules. Rangers provide simple routine trail maintenance and alert Greenway staff/volunteers of issues needing attention while patrolling. Orientation is required.
Skills Needed: Rangers perform their work while riding the Greenway. Primary role is to be another set of eyes and ears on the trail and to pass on situations that need attention.
Time Requested: Open and flexible depending on availability. Work would be done based on volunteers availability and interest.
Event Help
Assisting with fundraising ride BikeTOURberfest held in the fall. Duties could include assisting with course marking, safety, registration, SAG stop coverage, pre event planning.
Skills Needed: Skills dependent on role, but training would be provided if needed. Most duties would require little previous experience
Time Requested: Primary responsibilities would be done the day of event or the days leading up to it. Day of requirements would be between 7 AM-3 PM with specific timing and number of hours flexible.

Good News Habitat for Humanity
Seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.
Construction

Habitat provides all materials and tools necessary. All volunteers are under the supervision of our Habitat construction site superintendents in order to guarantee a safe experience and to build or rehab a quality home. No prior construction skills required! Our site superintendents will provide hands-on leadership, teaching, motivation and encouragement to all groups, individuals, sponsors and future homeowners!

​All volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Any volunteer under the age of 18, must have a guardian signature on our Volunteer Liability Waiver.

Skills Needed: Anyone who can swing a hammer, plant flowers, or paint interior walls.
Time Requested: We set aside Saturdays for groups to work with our Project Managers. Weekdays also available, depending on availability.

Assist Good News Habitat staff in our office!

Volunteer projects include filing, helping with mail campaigns, data entry, setting up events, and more! All office volunteers will be under the supervision of the volunteer coordinator or the quality assurance manager. Our staff members will provide guidance for every office project.

All volunteers must be at least 15 years old. Any volunteer under the age of 18, must have a guardian signature on our Volunteer Liability Waiver.

Skills Needed: Willing to work, friendly, good attitude.

Richmond Rose Garden
The Richmond Rose Garden board and volunteers care for the roses located in the Rose Garden area by Glen Miller Park.
Volunteer Gardener
We usually start working in mid April and finish around Dec. 1st. Volunteers can adopt a bed to maintain or just come and work in areas that need it. We generally work on Tuesday and Friday mornings. However, some like to volunteer in the evenings especially during the summer. We also have Spring and Fall work days that are usually on a Friday or Saturday. We need help with weeding in the beds and trimming of the roses. A board member would be happy to show anyone around and work with volunteers to learn how to care for the roses. Contrary to what you might think, it is easy to do. We do have a volunteer guide we can give someone with more detailed information. We look forward to working with you in the gardens.
Skills Needed: Weeding, planting, bending and light lifting
Time Requested: 1-2 hours per week
Rose Garden Board Member
Help in guiding the Richmond Rose Garden by serving on the board of directors.
Skills Needed: Organizational skills are helpful. We are looking to have a diverse board. Some members are also volunteers, but it is not required. Fundraising skills would be also appreciated.
Time Requested: Minimum is 1 hr per month. Could be up to around 10 hours a month.
Events Coordinator
This person would coordinate events to be held in the Richmond Rose Garden.
Skills Needed: Organizational skills.
Time Requested: It depends on the number of events. We are looking for someone who will coordinate and be present at the events. We may also need clean up. The summer time would require more time committed to this position.

Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana
Our mission is simple and direct: To lead the fight against hunger. We do this by distributing food to hungry Hoosiers through a network of over 250 partner agencies in 21 counties, including emergency food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters.
Senior Shopping Day Volunteer at Circle U Help Center
Assist with distributing food to Wayne and Union County seniors age 55 and over inside at the Circle U Help Center pantry.
Skills Needed: Volunteers need to be able to handle 20-50lbs depending on where they are placed on the distribution line. Be able to stand for up to two hours and move around. We try to accommodate everyone's needs and do have some sitting positions. Need to be courteous and helpful to clients and other volunteers.

Art is Japan is a multi-cultural hands-on program for children kindergarten through 3rd grade. Volunteers would work at different stations helping children complete activities and crafts.

Circle You Help Center
Circle U Help Center has been serving the local community since 1979. At the present time we are serving over 1,600 hot meals on a monthly basis. Included in this total are 40 meals that are delivered each Saturday to those people that are homebound. We currently serve on Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays and our food Pantry operates on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month.

In the kitchen: helping to prepare and serve the on site meals and clean up afterwards.
In the food pantry: assisting with food bag distribution, sorting food, and restocking the shelves.

Drop N Go Program c/o Wayne County Food Council
The Drop N Go Program distributes produce at three elementary schools in Richmond, IN - Starr, Vaile, and Fairview. These distributions will be in rotation at the above schools on the last Monday of each month that school is in session. See Time Requirement below for next location.

    Coach/Volunteer Orientation, commonly referred to as CVO is a one-hour, entry level training class required for all Class A Volunteers.  A Class A volunteer is any volunteer who has regular contact with athletes through roles such as coach, chaperone, or administrative authority.  Contact Lonnie Snow at 765-732-3636 to see when our next CVO training will take place.
  3. Complete the Online Protective Behaviors Training
    A brief, online tutorial called Protective Behaviors.  This is a very  important part of your training - what to do in the case of abuse or suspected abuse of athletes.  This training is for the protection of the athlete - everyone's number one priority - and also for your protection as a volunteer.

Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP)
The Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) is part of a federal network of State Health Insurance Assistance Programs located in every state. SHIIP is a non-profit organization designed to provide an unbiased place for seniors and pre-retirees to find answers to their health insurance questions. All of our services are free.
SHIIP Counselor

We provide physical therapy on horseback for disabled youth and adults.
Horse Leaders and Rider Assistants
The horse leader leads the horse while the disabled rider takes a riding lesson. The riding assistant walks along next to the rider during the lesson to assist with balance and confidence. All volunteers also help keep the barn, horses, and tack clean.
Skills Needed: Knowledge of horses is useful but not necessary. Volunteer training is held on a regular basis.
